Questions and answers

  1. What questions can I ask?
You can ask any question about digital photography (which is what the site is about) that can be answered with words or numbers. However, questions that has a clear or definite answer are those that will elicit the most useful responses. DPanswers is not a blog or a discussion site, and questions that looks more like an invitation to a holy war than a genuine request for information (e.g. “Is Nikon better than Canon?”) will typically receive a generic response with links to some background information before being locked for further answers. Most askers are looking for a specific piece of information like, “What causes mosquito noise?” or “How does the crop factor of my DSLR affect aperture?” Our staff will try to provide you with accurate and relevant answers to questions that can be answered. Keep in mind that DPanswers is not a substitute for professional advice. We also reserve the right to delete questions on a case-by-case basis if they do not comply with our editorial policy and guidelines for “Proper Use”, as specified in our Terms of Service. DPanswers discourages and may remove questions that: request private information about individuals, want assistance in conducting illegal activities, are meant to sell or advertise products, refer or relate to adult content, and/or are homework, test or exam questions.
  2. Why are some questions locked?
Some questions do not have a clear answer, and are more an invitation to an open ended debate. DPanswers is not a debate site. In such cases the DPanswers editorial staff will provide some links to sources where one can find more information on the subject, and then lock the question. This means that it will no longer be possible to provide additional answers to that particular question.
  3. Can I use DPanswers to find answers for my homework?
In general, we recommend that you use DPanswers as a search tool to assist you with your homework or to search for answers you need to complete a test or an exam. However, you should not post your assignment on DPanswers as a substitute for you doing the work yourself. Please note that we reserve the right to remove questions from the site for any reason, and questions that are clearly posted by pupils or students in lieu of doing their own work or research will be deleted.
  4. How will I know when my question has been answered?
If you've created a login, asked the question while logged in, and allow us to send you email, you will be sent an email every time your question is answered (you may turn this feature of at any time and for any question). Otherwise, you need to revisit the site and check.
  5. What if a question doesn't have a clear answer?
Some questions simply don't have clear, straightforward answer (e.g. “Should I use a wide-angle or tele lens?”). In such cases, we may just provide background information to help you find out more about the subject, without giving you the clear answer that you may have hoped for.
  6. How do I rate an answer?
Below each answer, there is a small form where you can rate that answer on a scale from 0 to 5. Assign the answer a rating of 0 if it, in your opinion, is wrong or misleading, or if it is spam. On the other hand, if the answer in your opinion is the most helpful question to a particular question, you should assign it the rating of 5. The intervening values (1-4) can be used to distinguish between the other answers on the page. Use 4 for answers above average, 1 and 2 for correct answers below average, and 3 for average answers. The rating you submit is used to rank the answer against all the other answers provided to the same question. The highest ranked answers is displayed first on an answers page. After you've selected a rating, click the “Submit Rating” button to submit your rating to the DPanswers site. You may at any time change your rating of a particular answer, just select a different rating number and resubmit.

Proper use of the site

  1. What happens to people who spam DPanswers?
Users that spam DPanswers will no longer be able to log onto the site or post directly to the site. Instead, postings from users that engage in spam will be placed in a low priority moderation queue and will only appear on the site after being checked and approved by a moderator. Spam is in this case defined as material that have very little to do with the subject at hand, and appears to be posted to the site for no other reason than to promote certain services, products or product websites. Note that DPanswers does not disapprove of hyperlinks, and links to relevant and helpful information found at others sites is encouraged. What distinguishes link spam from other links is the relevance and helpfulness of the link.
  2. How do I report questionable content to editors at DPanswers?
At the bottom of every question/answers page we provide a link to We encourage you to use this link whenever you see questionable content posted to the site. In your email, please provide the URL of the page you find questionable, and the reason you find the content questionable.
